06/01/2016

In a motion for a resolution to be voted on by the European Parliament Ska Keller, refugee policy spokeswoman of the Greens in the European Parliament, shows the Member States and the European Commission the red card. 05/12/2016

Strasbourg, 12 May 2016

Plenary speech on the Council and Commission statements on 'Restoring a fullyfunctioning Schengen system':

The debate about Schengen is a debate about the future of Europe. We have to understand that closed borders and fences are not a solution for Europe's problem.  Instead, our internal borders are turning into a deadly barrier: Slovak border...

Plenary Speech on the Commission Plan for a Reform of the Common European Asylum System

05/11/2016

Strasbourg, 11 May 2016

Plenary Speech on the 'Commission statement - Decision adopted on the Common European Asylum System reform':

I am very worried about the Commission's reform proposal for the European asylum system. Neither Greece nor Italy would benefit from the proposed automatic solidarity scheme. Also, the reform would expand the dirty deal with Turkey to...

Plenary Speech: The European Council of Shame

03/09/2016

On Monday, the 28 Heads of States of the European Union decided to break international law, European law and the basic principles of humanity. They plan to close the borders for people in need of international protection, they are putting an end to the right to claim and seek asylum. I wonder: How can they sleep at night?

Press Statement: Summit of Isolation

03/08/2016

Brussels, 8th of March 2016

This is a summit of isolation. The European leaders want to effectively close down the borders for refugees. The European leaders are...

A Green Assessment of the European Commission's Proposal on a new Mandate for Frontex

12/18/2015

The proposal of the European Commission on a "European Border and Coast Guard" significantly increases the competence of Frontex – without increasing fundamental rights safeguards or parliamentary control. So far, the EU border agency was tasked with coordinating Member States’ control and surveillance of their external borders. Now, Frontex is renamed into a “European...

Plenary Speech: Council President Tusk failed at his job

12/17/2015

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, failed at his job. By suggesting that refugees should be detained for 18 months he did not only go against any humanitarian principle. Moreover, as president of the council, he is supposed to facilitate cohesion and consensus amongst European Member States. By saying what he said, Tusk did the opposite of what is in his...

Plenary Speech: Frontex Upgrade is the Wrong Signal

12/16/2015

The European Commission presented her proposal for upgrading the European external border agency Frontex. They want to stop illegal entries, but it is currently almost impossible to enter the European Union legally and safely. Stopping refugees before they enter EU territory is therefore the wrong answer.
